Productivity and Value

Transforming Performance in the Operating Room

Build more productive surgical teams and deliver safer care

About the course

Surgery is a vital but expensive medical service and the operating room (or ‘OR’) is among the most expensive resources hospitals use in the treatment of patients.  Although ORs have the potential to be a major source of profit when run safely and efficiently, they can quickly become a financial liability when managed poorly.

This new course brings together a number of strategies have been used to successfully improve OR performance over the last two decades, including:

  • financial incentives – such as offering monetary rewards to anaesthetists according to multiple performance criteria (St Jacques et al, 2004),
  • perioperative system optimisation – using Lean and Six Sigma quality improvement principles to measure, analyse and improve processes such as patient preparation, turnaround times, handovers and recovery (McNamara et al, 2014),
  • perioperative communication enhancement – introducing team briefings before each theatre list and debriefings afterwards in order to enhance collaboration between surgical team members (Bethune et al, 2011), and
  • multi-step training strategies – such as the Golden Patient Initiative (Javed et al, 2013; Roberts et al, 2015) and the Productive Operating Theatre Programme developed by the English National Health Service’s Institute for Innovation and Improvement (Ahmed et al, 2013).

Delivered via IHLM’s online learning platform and through live interactive Zoom webinars you will become part of a global community learning how to accelerate their hospital’s post-pandemic recovery and deliver sustained high performance in their OR.

  • manage the day-to-day functions of the OR – including the supply chain, financial administration and quality management
  • optimise the use of valuable resources such as staff, consumables, equipment and theatre capacity
  • improve personal and interpersonal skills such as time management, problem-solving and conflict resolution
  • continuously collect and analyse the data with which to measure the performance of the OR, identify improvement opportunities and assure compliance with appropriate standards

  • work at your own speed through a carefully curated collection of self-paced online learning materials that include video lectures, podcasts, interviews and real-world case studies
  • evidence-based research from peer-reviewed publications will help you dig more deeply into topics that really interest you
  • you are not alone – you will interact with other course members, collaborate on learning activities and get direct feedback and coaching from the course leader during weekly Zoom webinars
  • earn professional certification by completing weekly learning activities and mini-projects

This course should take approximately 4 – 6 hours per week.  You can expect to devote about 1 – 2 hours per week to self-paced learning, 1 – 2 hours per week preparing for and participating in the webinar and 1 – 2 hours per week applying your knowledge through learning activities and mini-projects.  Every webinar is recorded so you can rewatch it at any time.
